In the foundation of Alcoholics Anonymous, Bill Wilson and Dr William Silkworth sought the advice of a Buddhist Lama.
The Lama said that the 12 steps of AA strongly resembled Buddhist principles, and should alcoholism be switched with addiction, the 12-steps of AA are virtually synonymous with Buddhist doctrine and practice.
Carl Jung was also approached by AA’s Bill Wilson who remarked that every addict is in fact seeking God in one way or another when they use their drug of choice, meaning Alcoholics Anonymous and its focus on a spiritual life is very psychologically powerful for those seeking recovery from addiction
